Making Words

Finally, a Language Arts post from me, Kerri!
My dear friend Kim from my old school has the coolest file folders with sticky notes on the inside that have letters on them, and she has her kids use the sticky notes to make words. When they are done making a word, they just put the sticky note back in it's "place" on the file folder. Genius! So much better than letter tiles that end up getting lost, on the floor, inside desks, you get the idea. (Makes me crazy!) Whenever the sticky note loses it's sticky, you just quickly make a new one for whatever letter you need. I love it!
Sooo...I made some templates on my trusty MAC and viola, new making words folders! I also color coded the sticky note letters, to help my firsties remember the beginning middle, ending sounds, and digraphs when we make words together! Click the link underneath the pictures and get making! :)

Have a Happy Saturday!

This is so cool! I love making words but ut takes way too long to pass out the letters. I'm on vacation this week - I'll be making these. I can't wait to use them. Thanks for sharing!!

I use post-it notes but usually spend the 5 minutes it takes to pass out and them another 5 to write the letters we need. I LOVE this idea!!!

I made making words too! My mentor teacher showed them to me! I recently just switched mine from post-its to to velcro, since my firsties were a little rough with the post-its! They are great now, and I agree great way to help those ones with their phonics!

We teach the vowel pairs also - oi, oy, au, aw. Any idea how we could add these? i would like your template that I could change to add these if possible. I can't change a google doc. If I added another folder and stapled them together - that would work. Another folder would add my space that I needed to do vowel digraphs. What do you think?

I love this! I have folders filed with baggies in each one. It takes up so much space and letters get lost.

What a fabulous idea. I used Wilson Fundations during student teaching and loved building words with students. I just got a job covering a maternity leave (yeah!) but they don't have magnetic tiles. Would you be willing to share your template so I could edit it to add chunks and vowel pairs as they come up? My email address is snmartin.33@gmail.com. I love that there are so many teachers sharing such amazing ideas. I will get started creating these ASAP. Thanks again for sharing!

That is exactly what I was thinking...I'm a first year teacher and have been meaning to make folders like this with Velcro since before the winter break but never got around to making them. I'm so excited that Kerril had the same idea and shared the template! This will save me so much time making them.

Like another commenter, I am wondering how you printed on the sticky note material or did you print on paper and use sticky note glue to make do-it-yourself sticky notes? I am wondering about word like "that" which use a letter twice...will tweak this idea anyway. But just wondered about your ideas. reedmwordy@aol.com

I can't thank you enough for this Making Words template. I started making it weeks ago and then lost the page telling me how to finish it. So, now the lost is found, and I can finish putting mine together. Thank you so much for sharing this.

I do like this idea very much, although I've never minded pulling the letters for individual lessons. I keep my letters sorted in a nuts/bolts organizer. I post the names of letters required and the kids get them out and put them away.

If I were to try this method I think I'd like to have a template for printing on the post-its--type once and print multiple times for the number of students I have (work smarter, not harder). :) Do you have an editable template? If not, I'll recreate so that not only can I computer print the letters, but also customize for my grade level. Thank goodness for Pinterest--that's how I learned to print on Post-its.

I would love this template as well! I am a teacher canidate and could use this for my word work lessons! Thanks! jvance@jsu.edu

Hi there! I've used a similar idea before, and it is terrific. I've made slits above each letter/combination for a small paperclip, and place two letters in each square--so, there's another variation. Would you send me a copy of the template? Thaks so much! ttownsell@aol.com
