Taming the Wild - One Behavior Chart At A Time . . .

Tonight we are linkin' up with the peeps over at Blog Hoppin' once again for Teacher Week! Woohoo!

Tonight's topic: "Taming the Wild" (a.k.a. Classroom Management). 

This is an easy topic to blog about tonight, because I love, love, LOVE the behavior system that Kerri and I use in our classrooms.  It's easy AND effective! 

Part 1: The Behavior Clip Chart

I'm sure many of you have seen (or have yourselves) clip charts of all different shapes, sizes, colors and themes.  My clip chart has seven levels.  Each day my students start on GREEN, which means they are "Ready to Learn".  Throughout the day I move pins up AND down.  The first time a student pulls their pin down, they end up on YELLOW, which is "OOPS!".  There is no actual consequence for having your pin on OOPS, but for MOST kids the mere thought of having to get up in front of everyone and go pull you pin down is enough to keep them in line. Most of the time.

The ORANGE, RED and PURPLE levels on the chart are for the other 5% of the kiddos in your class who will need more of a consequence. The second time a student pulls their pin, they "LOSE 5 MINUTES" . . . this can be 5 minutes of Free Choice Time, Recess, etc.  It is really up to the teacher's discretion.  Another pin pulled equals "LOSE 10 MINUTES". And finally, at the bottom of the chart, is PHONE CALL HOME . . . which in my classroom, students know will be made from the Principal's Office.  I think I could probably count on one hand how many times I have had a child move their pin all the way down that far . . .

On the other extreme, I also am busy moving students up on the behavior chart throughout the day. I honestly think I probably spend MORE time "catching" students being good and making a big deal of moving one or two kiddos up (so that the rest of my little wiggle worms snap to attention!) than I do of pulling pins.  If I student gets moved up to BLUE (a.k.a. "Totally Awesome"), they earn a sticker.  When a student earns 5 days worth of stickers in their folder, they get to move their pin to RAINBOW, or "WOW". When a student is on RAINBOW, they get to pick a prize from the Prize Binder. 

The thing that I truly L-O-V-E about this behavior system is that students ALWAYS have the opportunity to turn their day around and improve!  When I have a student who has pulled their pin I like to give them reminders throughout the day for them to make better choices.  I am so proud when kiddos take pulling their pin seriously and really put in effort to change their behavior for the rest of the day!

Part 2: The Behavior Log

In order to help me keep track of students' behavior on a daily basis, AND to help keep students accountable to mom and dad for their behavior as well, I use a behavior log.  The behavior log tracks students' behavior and classwork every day.  (Warning: Having 30 five year olds fill in their behavior sheets the first six weeks of school is hellish. HELLISH I TELL YOU!  But . . . it DOES get better!)

At the end of every day before I have my kiddos pack up to go home (or before we clean up for Choice Time) we review the Behavior Chart.  SOMETIMES I have kids who had pulled their pin earlier in the day and reeeeeeeeeeeeeally tried hard to have a better day, so I might move them back up to GREEN.  Other kids might stay where they are. Or I may have one or two more kiddos who I want to move up to BLUE.  It just depends on the day.

Then, I send ALL of the kids to take their behavior log out of their folders at their table, color the little behavior bubble at the bottom whatever color they ended their day on (using the Behavior Chart), and they get to give themselves a happy face for "Classwork" if all of their work is finished. (More on that tomorrow when Kerri talks about teaching tips & tricks!) 

At the end of every week, I take the behavior logs out of all of the students' folders, make notes or corrections if necessary (especially in the beginning of the year!), and I file the logs into my Homework Bin so that they get sent home the following Monday in the HW folder.  That way parents can easily glance and see what kind of day their kiddo had last week.  MOST of the time parents tell me that their kiddos are super honest, and all they have to do is ask what color they ended their day on and they get a pretty good idea of how their behavior was.

Part 3: The Prize Binder

The Prize Binder was not always the Prize Binder.  Once upon a time I did have a "Treasure Chest" full of all sorts of odds and ends and random things that my kidlets always thought were cool.  But over time I felt like I was spending too much time and money keeping my treasure chest full and exciting.

Sooooo . . . Kerri and I created a Prize Binder! :)

Inside the Prize Binder are also different prize choices for students to choose from when they get their 5th blue day (or 10th, 15th, etc.).  The beauty of the Prize Binder is that all of the prizes are absolutely free for the teacher to provide and usually pretty easy as well.  And there are so many choices!  Here are just a few  . . .

Ball Boss - a good choice for all those boys that ALWAYS want the ball first! :)

Stinky Feet - Kinda gross, but usually a kid favorite . . .

Swip Swap - Kiddos LOVE switching spots for the day in class.  So exciting, right?

And finally . . . Scout Out.  For whatever reason my class last year LOVED to help me scout out good behavior. We give out "Best on the Beach" certificates, and my little "scout" would be in charge of catching people showing our schoolwide character traits to get a Best on the Beach.  It was so sweet to watch - the biggest prize of all to them was to catch OTHERS doing nice things. 

 Sigh.  I love THOSE kind of teacher moments. :)

In order to make the prizes a bit more tangible for the kids (and to keep track of who picked what prize) we shrunk the prize choices down to be coupon-sized . . .

And this is what all of the different prize coupons look like in the front of the prize binder. Once a student makes their choice, they can take their coupon home to show mom and dad! :)



So there you have it folks!  All you need is a Behavior Chart, Behavior Log and a Prize Binder and you are set to go!!

Teacher Week-Organization!!

Good afternoon, Friends! Kerri here...

We are finally linking up with my gals over at Blog Hoppin' for Teacher Week! YAY! 

I am excited to share with you a little bit about how I organize my classroom. Lindsay does lots of these same things, since we taught together for 4 years!

Number 1...Bins on top of cupboards! I finally did this this summer and I am sooooo glad that I did. Here is the after photo...

Not only does this look so much more organized, now I can just pull down the tub that I need and everything is in one spot! I.LOVE.IT!!

Number 2...Weekly work. I keep all of my papers that the kids will be completing for the week in one box that has labeled tabs. EVERYTHING goes in here, and when I am preparing for the next day, I know just where it is. This has TOTALLY helped my sanity BIG TIME!

Number 3...Centers or Stations Tubs. I put everything I need for each Center (Language Arts and Math-we do different stations on different days, depending on our pull-out schedule) into one of these lovely turquoise tubs and after I have explained the task to the class, I can hand each group (I had 4 groups last year) their tub with all of the materials in it and off they go to their area. When we are finished with our rotations for the day, the kids put everything neatly back in the tub and hand it to me. Easy Peasy, and totally portable!

Okay, I have a confession to make. I. HATE. PAPERWORK. HATE it with a PASSION! It inevitably gets lost in all of my piles, because, oh did I forget to mention that I am also a piler?? Ugh...Paperwork gives me hives. 
My solution this year is this fabulous magnetic board which I will put all of the important papers on so I make sure not to LOSE THEM!! I got it on Etsy from Livy Lou Designs and it is FABULOUS...

 She has all different sizes of these magnetic boards and they are all sooo cute!!

Here is another fabulous idea I saw all over blogland this summer. My units and centers were literally OUT OF CONTROL. They were in the bottom of my big storage cupboard and they were threatening to eat me, I think. Enter the turquoise Sterilite pull out drawers, one for each month (soon to be labeled!). These are behind my teacher table and I can just grab what I need for the week quickly and easily. YAY!

I am sure you all do this, but I got a new student filing crate this summer (my old one was army green filled with gray hanging files. NOT PRETTY!) and I think it is sooo much better! I only send home the kids work once a month (remember, I hate paperwork!) so I have a mom file it once a week (usually Mondays) in this crate and at the end of the month I send it home. The parents get to see growth over time that way, and also they can see what we've been working on for the month. This system works great for me!

Here's another thing I LOVE having in my classroom...

I got these at Lakeshore and they are magnetic pockets for your whiteboard! I put all of my warm-ups for the week in it and then I can quickly grab the warm-up each morning for my kids to do. These are AWESOME and the magnet is super strong. LOVE these!!

Finally...This is my "Welcome Area" right when you come in the front door and I love it! Every Friday, my kids put their homework in one tub, their Library book in the other and then everyday they check their cubby before they walk out the door. Also, the turquoise tray is for important notes, parent questions, etc. This SAVES my life big time and I think it is so cute and inviting!

I got a groupon for my Hubby and I to have a little getaway, sans children, to the Palm Springs area. Well, last week the hubs got Lasik surgery and then realized he wouldn't be able to go in the pool or jacuzzi whilst in Palm Springs. GREAT. What else is there to do in 107 degree weather! Whatever, we were still excited to get away. Well, this was the view from our hotel (Don't be jealous. It's pretty amazing!)

TADA!!!!

Yup. We were soooo NOT in Palm Springs, peeps!! To be fair, the hotel was nice inside and the pool area was super cute, but walk out the front door and it was sand, tumbleweeds, and trash folks! Moral of this story?? Beware of good deals on Groupon!

Lotsa Learning!!

Morning, Peeps!! Kerri here...

I'm gonna keep this super short and sweet because my hubs and I are heading out to Palm Springs today for a little getaway! HOLLA!! See ya kids, have fun at Grandma's house! :)

I FINALLY finished my latest Back to School...Lotsa Learning unit....TADA!!

I designed these activities for your littles to do either independently or with a partner, and I also included cover sheets and directions for each activity so you can easily put each game into a 9x12 manila envelope and keep them stored in a place where your little kidlets can go and get them whenever they finish their "Must Do" work. 

I plan on having these games out all the time, and when my kidlets are looking for something to do, Presto! Go and pick a Lotsa Learning game, my friends! 

Recording sheets are also included if you would like to use these in your math and Literacy stations first to introduce them! 

YAY! Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy!! These are perfect for Kinder kids all year long and for your Firsties at the beginning of the year.

Five for Friday (on Saturday AGAIN!)

Happy Saturday, blogging buddies!! Kerri here...

I know I'm a little late to the party, but for some reason summer is making me all discombobulated! What day is is again?? :) Anyways, I'm linking up with Kacey's Five for Friday linky party! Sooo glad it's back!

I feel like I haven't blogged in FOREVER. Every time I think about it, my kindle calls out my name, or the backyard looks soooo inviting, or Travis Eliot (my Ultimate Yogi instructor) reminds me that it's time to get ULTIMATE. Aaaahhh, Summer. How I love thee!

Let's get started, shall we??

Number 1....Ultimate Yogi! I am on day Number 19, Peeps!! That's right...I have done this program for 19 days STRAIGHT, which is HUGE for me, because I HATE working out. Always have, always will. But this program is perfectly perfect for me. Each day is a different power yoga DVD, such as Cross-Training (my favorite), Cardio (ugh. This one KILLS me!), Strength (Also kills me!), Yin, Detox (lots of twists in this one), and Vitality. There are also other DVDs, but they haven't been introduced yet.
I am bound and determined to do 36 days straight! After that, school will be starting and we all know what that means...Wah wah wah wah. It will be a challenge to do yoga every day, am I right?? We'll see how it goes with school starting, but right now, I am LOVING being ULTIMATE!

Number 2...Classroom Decor! I have been working in my classroom a couple of days a week. Here is what I've been up to...

I am absolutely in LOVE with my classroom library! The rug is from Walmart (best purchase EVER!), the red chair was on clearance at Target, and the other 2 chairs I have had forever. Sooo happy...

Apparently, we can have up to 27 kids this year (KILL.ME.NOW!) so I had to get a new carpet with 30 squares! This one was a factory second and was like $250? Seems like a lot of $$, but trust me, it was a great deal. Classroom carpets are CRAZY expensive!

I love my new banner with the Dots on Turquoise theme I have all over my room. It's sooo cute!

My mother-in-law made me some super cute owl curtains to cover my ugly cubbies filled with manipulatives. Aren't they deliciously cute??

Number 3....DUCK DYNASTY!! Ya'll, I am officially obsessed with these guys and I'll tell you why. I got to hear Phil Robertson speak at Saddleback Church about a month ago, and it was AMAZING. He is exactly the same as on the show. He keeps it real, man!

We also got our very own Si Robertson ice tea cups!!

AND...guess what they sell on Amazon?? A Duck Dynasty board game! Well, you know I had to have it!

And this has got to be the best Duck Dynasty thing EVER...

Five For Friday {Saturday Edition}

Happy Saturday folks!  Lindsay here . . .

 

Saturday?  Yep. That's right. Once again my Friday linky is being put up on a Saturday . . . could that be a sign that I have been on summer break for too long?  I am officially forgetting what day it is! Yikes!

 

Anywho, we are SO EXCITED to link up with Doodle Bugs Teaching once again for . . . Five For Friday!!

 

 

 

This week is "Five For Friday: Messner Summer Vacation Edition" . . .

 

1. Farm, Fair and Furry Animal Fun!

 

 It has been such a busy, crazy, WONDERFUL summer! And, I am proud to say, we have been getting in touch with our "farming roots"!!  (This country girl has to make sure her OC baby has SOME farmer baby in him after all!!)

 

First we checked out Tanaka Farms - a local, family owned farm in our area. Jack and I got to pick carrots, kale, tomatoes and lettuce!  It was so fun, however Jack was NOT that impressed with the vegetables . . . he was MUCH more interested in the tractor that was pulling our wagon around the farm!!

 

Next up?  A trip to the OC Fair to check out all the livestock (and the friend food too, I suppose!).  Jack was a little too scared to ride the ponies, so we had to settle for this fake pony for this year's trip . . .

 

 

And here we are at a local park checking out . . .yep, the horses. My son is officially obsessed. 

 

{Hmmmm . . . wondering if there is a way we could keep a lil pony in our townhouse . . .}

 

2. Summer Trip to San Diego!!

 



Our family took a much-needed mini-vacation to San Diego and it was SO fun!  {Unfortunately for us, it was during a horrible heat wave!!} 

 

I soon learned that heat wave + prego momma = no bueno. 

 

One of the best parts of the trip was taking Jack to the San Diego Zoo.  Here we are in front of the elephants . . . .

 

 

We even got to watch the elephants getting their morning bath!  Jack LOVED it!!

There aren't very many pictures of mommy from this trip . . . I was a hot, sweaty waddling MESS. But at least this little guy was happy!

Then, of course, we had to spend a lil time at the beach.  Which was when we found out that Jack officially hates the sand. And the waves. And . . . everything about the beach. Here he is a CLASSIC shot of him fleeing from the beach. Shortly before we packed up and left.  Sigh.

 
This is one of my favorite pictures from our trip.  Its just a random shot from one of the beachside playgrounds in Mission Bay, but I just love my little man!

3. Curtains - A Tale of the Incredibly Indecisive Teacher . . .

Yep. That's me.  Can't make decisions to save my life.  Well, I suppose I technically CAN make a decision, but only after changing my mind 3,592 times, waffling back and forth, and driving my loved ones absolutely nuts.

So when I decided I wanted curtains for my classroom (ya know, to make with my sewing machine that is STILL in the box) I knew I better pick out a fabric ASAP.  So I headed over to Hobby Lobby and was soon overwhelmed by all of the adorable choices. . . .

Here are three fabrics that I love . . . but I'm not sure. I have a wall of windows, so the print has to be one that I like. Or maybe I could have alternating patterns or colors of print on each window section? Anyway, thought I would share and maybe you all could share your thoughts!

Or finally, a yellow polka dot . . . which makes me so happy when I look at it! (Who doesn't love polka dots???)

4. Kindergarten Organization and Prep

Every summer I have to turn in the keys to my classroom . . . and it KILLS me!  I would love to go in over the summer and work a little here and there . . . drop off school supplies . . . and feel productive.  But since I am officially LOCKED OUT until the 12th I have been organizing, printing and planning so that when I get this big preggo booty in my room I will be ready to go!!

Anyway, I put this little Weekly Behavior Sheet up in my TPT store as a FREEBIE in case any of you are interested.  It is one of the essential elements of my tried-and-true behavior management system . . . So I decided to cutesify it a bit and share it with y'all!

5. And  . ..  It's A Boy!!

That's right . . . we found out on my hubby's birthday that Baby #2 is officially a boy!!  Hooray for brothers!!

And now . . . we are in FULL ON baby naming mode. And indecisiveness.  I would like something that goes with Jack {who is really Jackson Joseph} and that is a little southern/old fashioned/has a cute nickname . . .

Suggestions???????
